SLE has some talented young artists who are demonstrating kindness this holiday season. They have created some amazing artwork to be donated for auction to raise money for social awareness and to support families in our community as well as to pay for additional art supplies for future projects.
It all started with a few students who were asked to paint positive vibes on the walls of a classroom for younger students to enjoy during lunch clubs. This eventually grew to six students meeting every Friday to illustrate their thoughts while listening to a specific genre of music (upbeat, Native American meditation, pop, calming, etc.) for a half hour. During these art sessions they seemed to learn to appreciate other’s artistic perspectives and show concern for each other’s feelings and recognize their own inner strengths and the strengths in others.
As art supplies became sparse, we brainstormed ways to raise money to pay for our art supplies and to have pizza once a month. The idea blossomed into auctioning the artwork and donate some of the proceeds from the auction to social awareness activities and to assist families in our community during this holiday season.
Over the past six weeks younger students would observe the older students painting and it was explained that they were painting to donate their art to raise money to assist families and to pay for art supplies. It was amazing to see many of our younger students want to participate, to follow the lead of their older peers.
Once a student completed his/her art the student was given the choice of keeping their artwork or donating to help others this Christmas. Every one of these students chose to donate their artwork to help others and volunteered to paint more for donations during their lunch hour. As you can see, we have over 30 canvases of amazing art for our auction and every day a student will ask if they can paint to donate their picture.
I can honestly say it has been an honor and privilege watching these students express themselves so openly and demonstrate kindness and love for others. Needless to say, at the rate of their altruism, we will be needing more art supplies.
Thank you for supporting these young artists and the families in our community.
